I’ve been alternating my training with these shoes on roads and trails. After 3 weeks I haven’t had any huge problems with them. The new off center lacing pattern that follows the top line of my foot provides a snug arch wrap and has taken the pressure off the top of my foot. The improved gel cushioning helps runners who are more heavyset and require the additional cushioning when feet hit the ground. The only bad thing I can see from these shoes is that after 3 weeks they are showing signs of wear with a slight tear in the fabric along the trim of the shoes. I haven’t had any blisters or shin splints so far and it has great cushioning for longer runs. Their average lifespan is about 200 miles which makes the Kayano’s great for beginners who are just starting out to run.

Running flats are lightweight racing shoes that are flat and have no heel. They provide minimal cushioning, less durable and are really uncomfortable in the long run. These non-traditional running shoes are not suitable for long training runs and wear out faster than the traditional running shoe. Their average running life is around 125-250 miles. Running flats purpose is only for racing, and racing to win.

Having said this, traditional running shoes with different arch support is a common cause of injuries. Runners wear the incorrect shoes which cause more strain on the feet or knees. As a result, a small number of runners train and race exclusively in racing flats.

There are many types of nice looking running flats. Although they are lightweight, fast and less bulky, I wouldn’t trade that for support, stability, and cushioning. Here are some racing flats.

When should I replace my running shoes?

There are many variables to account for when deciding when to change your running shoes. It depends on your weight, height, what surfaces you run on, how fast you run, how you land, etc. On average it is recommended to replace your running shoes every 300-400 miles or every year. Your favourite pair of running shoes will lose traction, rubber at the bottom will look worn out, lose it’s cushioning and stability support system. So, it’s time to buy new shoes, who doesn’t love shopping for shoes.

Keep a training log to record when you bought the shoes. This way it’s easier to track how much mileage you accumulated on them. When you reached the half way mark, consider buying a new pair of runners to alternate between runs. After a while you will notice a difference between the old-less cushioning with the new-more support and cushioning.

Runners typically have 2 – 3 running shoes in rotation to let the shoes dry out. You’re shoes will last longer if they are allowed to decompress.

What type of feet do I have?

When choosing the right pair of running shoes, it comes down to more of an art than science. A pair of running shoes might be great for one runner but not the right fit for another. It depends on the purpose of your run, type of surfaces you are planning to run on, weight, and most importantly is the shape and arch of your feet.

It’s easy to find out what type of feet you have. Simply do the footprint test for your left foot.

Wet your foot (or after you take a shower).
Place a blank piece of paper on the floor in front of you.
Walk normally towards the piece of paper.
Step on the paper with your left foot.
Look at the water mark on the paper.

Running shoes are categorized into 3 major categories to compensate for the 3 major areas that the runners usually need support when running. Running shoes categorized as follows – cushioned, stability and motion control. Take note of the following types of feet and what type of foot you have to decide which type of support is right type for you.

Normal Foot

Lands: Outside of the heel and rolls inwards slightly.
Pronated: Not pronated.
Notes: Runner is efficient.
Recommended Support: Stability with moderate control.
Recommended shoes for normal feet.

Flat Foot

Lands: Outside of the heel and rolls inwards (pronates) exessively.
Pronated: Over pronated.
Notes: Might cause injuries in the future.
